Capitals’ Alex Ovechkin considered day-to-day with lower-body injury

Washington Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin was not on the ice for practice on Sunday and is being considered day-to-day with a lower-body injury he suffered against the Philadelphia Flyers on Friday.

The incident occurred when Ovechkin skated into Flyers forward Travis Konecny and fell to the ice during the first period. He didn’t put much weight on his left leg upon getting up, but was able to get himself off the ice and did not return.

Washington is already without star centre Nick Backstrom to begin the season due to a hip injury.

Ovechkin signed a five-year, $47.5 million deal with the Capitals in the off-season and is expected to chase Wayne Gretzky’s record 894 goals over the duration of the contract. The 36-year-old is 164 goals behind, and would need to average 33 goals per season to pass The Great One.

Last season, the Russian sniper missed seven of the final eight games with a groin injury — more time than he missed the previous 10 years combined. His teammates certainly expect his usual durability to prevail after his latest knock.

“We were kind of joking in the room there that that Russian blood, he’ll be back soon,” said teammate T.J. Oshie after Friday’s game. “I don’t know if he even misses a day. He’s a tough guy. It’s always concerning seeing him lay there, but no doubt he’ll be back scoring goals in no time.”
