Devils’ Jack Hughes has dislocated shoulder, won’t need surgery at this time

The New Jersey Devils announced on Thursday that Jack Hughes suffered a dislocation of his left shoulder earlier this week against Seattle, but a subsequent MRI revealed no further damage, ruling out the need for surgery at this time.

Hughes has been placed on the injured reserve and there is currently no timeline for his return. The team said it will re-evaluate him next week with the aim of determining when he may be able to play again.

The injury occurred near the end of the first period of Tuesday’s game against the Kraken. As Hughes was battling for the puck in a corner of the Seattle zone, he was knocked to the ice by the Kraken’s Jeremy Lauzon. The 20-year-old was in immediate pain after the hit and but skated off the ice on his own power while cradling his left arm. He did not join his teammates for the start of the second period.

Lauzon was not given a penalty on the play.

Hughes had one assist in 7:42 of ice time before the injury after scoring two goals in the team’s season-opening win over Chicago.
