Oilers place Darnell Nurse on IR, add Mike Smith to long-term IR

The Edmonton Oilers have placed defencemen Darnell Nurse and Slater Koekkoek on injured reserve, and added netminder Mike Smith to long-term injured reserve, the team announced Friday.

In a corresponding move, the club has called up defencemen Philip Broberg and William Lagesson from AHL affiliate Bakersfield Condors.

Nurse is expected to miss two to three weeks with a broken finger he suffered versus the Winnipeg Jets in overtime on Thursday, according to head coach Dave Tippett. He led the Oilers with 31:21 time on ice in the shootout win.

In 16 games this season, the rearguard has 11 assists and is averaging the fifth-most ice-time in the NHL. Nurse has played in 326 consecutive games and is set to miss his first contest since February 2017.

Koekkoek left Thursday’s game against the Jets after a collision with forward Evgeny Svechnikov sent him into the boards. Head coach Dave Tippett says he will miss three to four weeks with a lower-body injury. He has one assist through 11 games in his second season with the Oilers.

Smith, 39, was 2-0 in three appearances this season, posting a .920 save percentage and a 3.08 goals-against average before being placed on injured reserve with a lower-body injury on Oct. 21. He is “week-to-week at best,” according to Tippett.

Broberg, the eighth overall pick in the 2019 NHL Draft, has 10 assists in 13 games with the Condors this season. The Swede has yet to play his first NHL game.

Lagesson has played 27 games with the Oilers over the previous two seasons and could make his season debut in the NHL. He currently has two points through 11 games in the AHL.
