Minnesota Wild winger Marcus Foligno will avoid disciplinary sanction after jumping off the bench to fight Toronto Maple Leafs forward Wayne Simmonds on Saturday, according to The Athletic’s Michael Russo.
The NHL deemed this action as legal because nobody changed for Foligno, as Russo points out.
The sequence occurred during the final minutes of the first period on Saturday. Foligno and Simmonds eventually dropped the gloves after the former jumped onto the ice during a scrum.
A similar incident transpired involving former Maple Leaf David Clarkson during a pre-season game against the Buffalo Sabres in 2013. Clarkson came off the bench to fight John Scott after he was trying to fight Phil Kessel, which led to a line brawl. Clarkson was suspended 10 games for his involvement.
Foligno, 30, has 10 goals and six assists in 24 games with the Wild this season.
