Argonauts fire vice-president John Murphy after altercation with fans

The Toronto Argonauts have fired vice-president of player personnel John Murphy after the CFL indefinitely suspended him last week following an altercation with fans in the aftermath of the East final on Dec. 5.

The Argos announced the decision on Tuesday, less than 48 hours after the Winnipeg Blue Bombers’ thrilling overtime win over the Hamilton Tiger-Cats in the Grey Cup. The team said the decision to terminate Murphy comes after an “internal review of the post-game incident.”

Video emerged of the incident on social media following the Argos’ loss to the visiting Ticats at BMO Field.

Murphy was hired to work alongside Argonauts GM Michael (Pinball) Clemons in late 2019.

Previously, Murphy worked in front-office roles for the Saskatchewan Roughriders, Winnipeg Blue Bombers and Calgary Stampeders.

The league says its investigation into player altercations with fans continues.

Argonauts players Chris Edwards and Dejon Brissett are seen in other videos engaging physically with a fan dressed in Ticats gear.

Toronto Police said last week they were investigating what happened after the game.
