Grand Slam of Curling cancels Meridian Open event due to COVID-19

The Pinty’s Grand Slam of Curling has cancelled next month’s Meridian Open event due to rising COVID-19 numbers across the country.

Sportsnet, which has owned and operated the series since 2012, made the announcement Wednesday.

“While disappointing, this decision was made to continue the pursuit of our top priority — the health and safety of the players, volunteers, fans, employees and partners,” Sportsnet and the Pinty’s Grand Slam of Curling said in a statement.

The Meridian Open, the third major tournament of the Pinty’s Grand Slam of Curling campaign, was scheduled to take place Jan. 11-16 in Camrose, Alta.

Featuring the top-ranked men’s and women’s teams from around the world, the Pinty’s Grand Slam of Curling has held two events so far this season. Team Mouat and Team Fleury captured the Masters titles in late October in Oakville, Ont., while Team Gushue and Team Hasselborg claimed the Boost National championships the following month in Chestermere, Alta.

Two more events are scheduled for later this season: the Princess Auto Players’ Championship (April 12-17 in Toronto) and the Kioti Tractor Champions Cup (May 3-8 in Olds, Alta.)
