The Minnesota Vikings have fired head coach Mike Zimmer after eight seasons with the team, as well as general manager Rick Spielman, who spent 10 years with the organization.
Zimmer, whose 71-56-1 record puts him third in Vikings history, led Minnesota to two NFC North titles and three playoff appearances during his tenure.
Zimmer had signed a three-year contract extension in 2020, which would have seen him stay in the role through 2023. Since the signing, though, the Vikings have finished sub-.500 in back-to-back seasons, a likely factor in the team’s decision to choose a new direction.
Spielman, who had been the team’s GM since 2012, made a mark with draft selections like Justin Jefferson, the team’s first round pick in 2020 who set an NFL rookie record for receiving yards with 1,400.
The Vikings’ season ended with disappointment this year, though there were moments for cautious hope sprinkled throughout. The team never won or lost more than two games in a row, but started slow with a 1-3 record and lost key games down the stretch to the Green Bay Packers and Los Angeles Rams.
