Canada’s Rachel Homan and John Morris moved up to a 2-1 round-robin record in mixed doubles curling at the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing with a 7-5 victory Friday morning over Jenny Perret and Martin Rios of Switzerland.
Morris, who is the reigning Olympic champion, and Homan split their pair of games to start the tournament Thursday losing 6-4 to Great Britain and recovering to beat Norway 7-6.
Although Perret and Rios started with the hammer, Homan and Morris struck the scoreboard first stealing three points in the opening end and never relinquished the lead. The Swiss missed the mark on all five shots with Perrot’s last rock sailing heavy past a sea of red rocks.
Already up by two in the fifth end, Canada added some insurance with a deuce. Switzerland called its power play in the sixth and Perret hit to score two points and cut the deficit in half.
Canada added a single in the seventh and Switzerland (1-3) had a shot to score an equalizing three points in the eighth to force an extra end but wrecked it for just one.
Homan shot at a sharp 78 per cent pace with Morris firing a game-high 89 per cent. Perret finished at 63 per cent with Rios at 71 per cent.
Morris teamed with Kaitlyn Lawes four years ago and defeated Rios and Perret in the gold-medal game in Pyeongchang.
Canada takes on the host team China in the following draw starting at 12:35 a.m. ET.
Meanwhile, Italy continues to top the table improving to a 3-0 record with an 11-8 victory over Norway (1-3) while Sweden (3-1) held off Australia (0-4) by a 7-6 result to take sole possession of second place in the standings.
China, Great Britain and the Czech Republic (all at 2-1) plus the United States (1-2) were idle during the draw.
The top four teams after the round-robin stage advance to the semifinals.
