Canada’s Madeline Schizas has pushed Canada into the final round of the figure skating team event at the Beijing Winter Olympics.
Schizas, 18, placed third in the women’s singles with 69.90 points in her Olympic debut, moving Canada from sixth place to fourth in the team event. Only the top five countries advanced to the final round on Sunday.
In the first discipline of the final round, Roman Sadovsky of Vaughan, Ont., was fifth in the men’s free skate.
Russia leads all countries with 45 points, the United States is second with 42, Japan is third with 39, Canada is fourth with 30 and China is fifth with 29.
Olympic favorite Kamila Valieva of Russia nearly eclipsed her own world record in the women’s short program of the team figure skating event.
The 15-year-old Valieva’s score of 90.18 points to “In Memoriam” by the Russian pianist and composer Kirill Richter at the Beijing Games was just off the record of 90.45 points set just weeks ago at the European championships.
Yuma Kagiyama, an 18-year-old from Japan, delivered a personal-best score of 208.94 points to easily win the men’s free skate.
Canada is the reigning gold medal winner in the event, and earned silver in 2014.
