The Pittsburgh Steelers have hired Brian Flores as the team’s new senior defensive assistant and linebackers coach.
Flores was fired from the Miami Dolphins despite leading the team back-to-back winning seasons.
“I am excited about Brian Flores joining our coaching staff given his history of developing and teaching defensive players during his time in the NFL,” Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin said in a statement. “Brian’s resume speaks for itself, and I look forward to him adding his expertise to help our team.
Flores filed a class-action lawsuit against the NFL and three teams — the Dolphins, Denver Broncos and New York Giants — alleging unfair hiring practices in the NFL. The league hired a law firm that includes former U.S. Attorney General Loretta Lynch to defend it and its teams in Flores’ race discrimination lawsuit.
In his lawsuit, Flores cites a string of text messages with Patriots coach Bill Belichick three days before his scheduled Giants interview for the head coaching position. Those texts led Flores to believe Brian Daboll already had been chosen as the new coach.
The most serious allegation in the lawsuit is Flores’ contention that Dolphins owner Stephen Ross told him he would pay him $100,000 for every loss during the coach’s first season because the owner wanted the club to “tank” so it could get the top draft pick.
There were nine head coach openings this offseason and two went to minorities: Mike McDaniel, who replaced Flores in Miami and is biracial, and Lovie Smith, who is African American and replaced David Culley, who also is Black. That brought the total of minority head coaches to five, three Black. More than 70 per cent of NFL players are Black.
Flores brings 14 years of coaching experience to the Steelers along with four years in a personnel role with the New England Patriots.
