Guy Lafleur’s family thanks Canadiens fans for empathy through cancer battle

Montreal Canadiens legend Guy Lafleur has been fighting lung cancer ever since a cancerous white spot was found on his right lung in September 2019, and his family on Thursday issued a statement thanking fans for their support.

Lafleur underwent a first surgery to remove both the upper lobe of his lung and lymph nodes at Centre Hospitalier de l’Université de Montréal (CHUM), the University of Montreal’s medical centre. Lafleur received more bad news in October 2020 that the cancer had was back and had to restart treatment.

The Lafleur family, overwhelmed with support from Canadiens fans, drafted a statement on the team’s social media accounts on Thursday afternoon.

“The Lafleur family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to Montreal Canadiens fans for their empathy and for the outpouring of love they’ve shown Guy Lafleur,” the family said.

The family added that Lafleur is still fighting cancer and followed by his doctors but is back home.

“To this end, he has appointments at the CHUM occasionally for check-ups,” the Lafleur family added. “After a short visit to the CHUM earlier this week, Guy is back home.”
