Former Red Sox player, broadcaster Jerry Remy passes away

The baseball community is mourning the loss of longtime Boston Red Sox broadcaster Jerry Remy, who passed away on Saturday night after fighting a courageous battle with lung cancer. Remy served more than 40 years to the Red Sox organization as a player, coach and broadcaster.

“On behalf of the entire Red Sox family, we send our deepest condolences to Jerry’s wife Phoebe, their three children, and the entire extended Remy family,” said Red Sox Chairman Tom Werner. “Jerry’s effortless style made him the finest baseball broadcaster of the past few decades.”

Remy was born in Fall River, MA before growing up in Somerset, MA. The infielder played 10 seasons in the major leagues for the California Angels (1975-77) and Red Sox (1978-1984), producing a career .275/.327/.328 slash line with seven home runs and 329 RBIs. In 1978, Remy was selected to the American League All-Star team.

After his baseball playing career, Remy coached Boston’s double-A affiliate New Britain Red Sox in 1986. In 1988, Remy transitioned to a broadcasting career as a colour analyst, calling Red Sox games on the New England Sports Network (NESN) for 33 years until 2021. This included covering four Red Sox World Series championships in 2004, 2007, 2013, and 2018.

Remy was inducted into the Red Sox Hall of Fame in 2006. He earned several honours thanks to his years of service with the Red Sox, including President of Red Sox Nation, the Massachusetts Sportscaster of the Year award and the Judge Emil Fuchs Memorial Award from the Boston Baseball Writers Association.

Several former and current Red Sox players offered their condolences to Remy and his family, including Xander Bogaerts, David Ortiz and Pedro Martinez.

“This is a such a sad day. My thoughts are with Jerry’s family and his loved ones,” Bogaerts said. “As a player, I always loved seeing Rem in our clubhouse at Fenway every day. He was the first person you’d see when you came in.”

“Thank you for calling me Big Papi on air — I will never forget that,” Ortiz said. “Miss you already, Rem Dawg.”
