Argonauts’ Bethel-Thompson fined, Edwards suspended six games

The CFL fined Toronto Argonauts quarterback McLeod Bethel-Thompson and suspended defensive back Chris Edwards for six games on Wednesday.

Both faced discipline following the Argos’ 27-19 loss to the Hamilton Tiger-Cats in the Eastern Final on Dec. 5.

Bethel-Thompson was fined an undisclosed amount for an “inappropriate on-field incident” with a cameraperson. The incident occurred as he walked off the field following the loss, and saw him bump into the cameraperson a few times.

“I think tempers were high on a lot of ends,” Bethel-Thompson said when discussing what happened during his end-of-season media availability. “I know, the cameraman was just trying to do his job. I felt like he was too close in a vindictive way, but there was zero excuse for me to touch the camera in any form or fashion.

“It’s unacceptable behaviour. And hopefully, this can reach that cameraman that I’m very sorry for interfering with his work. I was trying to get to the Hamilton team to congratulate them, which was a hard enough endeavour.”

Edwards received a six-game ban starting next season for his role in a post-game altercation with a spectator.

Video surfaced shortly after the game on Twitter, showing Edwards engaging in physical contact with a fan dressed in Tiger-Cats gear before police and security intervened.

“The Toronto Argonauts, in conjunction with MLSE security, the CFL league office and local police, are investigating a post-game incident involving team personnel and visiting fans,” the team wrote in a statement to Sportsnet at the time. “The club will issue a statement once the investigation is complete and any outcomes are determined.”

Last week, Toronto fired vice-president of player personnel John Murphy, who received an indefinite suspension from the league shortly after video of the off-field incident emerged on social media.
