Canada’s Brooke D’Hondt, 16, reaches Olympic snowboard halfpipe final

Brooke D’Hondt, a 16-year-old from Calgary, was one of two Canadians to qualify for the Olympic women’s snowboard halfpipe final on Wednesday in Beijing.

D’Hondt, the youngest athlete competing for Canada at the Games, finished 10th in the qualifier with a score of 70. The top 12 advanced to the final on Wednesday at 8:30 p.m. ET.

Elizabeth Hosking of Longueuil, Que., finished ninth at 70.5 and also earned a ticket to the final.

Reigning Olympic champ Chloe Kim of the United States was first in the qualifier with a score of 87.75.

The 21-year-old from California turned it up a notch in run No. 2, but fell on her switch backside 720. She raised her hand as if to say, “Oh well.” She playfully stuck out her tongue while waiting for her score.

Mitsuki Ono of Japan was second in qualifying, one day after appearing to be bothered by a hip ailment in training and in some discomfort. Cai Xuetong of China had the third-best score in qualifying, with Queralt Castellet of Spain also in the mix.
