Blue Jays expected to sign veteran outfielder Dexter Fowler to minor-league deal

The Toronto Blue Jays are expected to sign free-agent outfielder Dexter Fowler to a minor-league deal, Sportsnet’s Ben Nicholson-Smith has learned.

The 38-year-old Fowler, while playing for the Los Angeles Angels, suffered a season-ending torn left ACL on April 9, 2021, in a game against the Blue Jays after sliding into second base. Although on a minor-league deal, he will be invited to the organization’s major-league camp.

Fowler, who made his major-league debut with Colorado in 2008, has a career slash of .259/.358/.417 with 127 home runs and 517 RBIs in 1,460 career games with the Rockies, Houston Astros, Chicago Cubs, St. Louis Cardinals and Angels.

Fowler’s best season came in 2016 with the Cubs when he was an NL All-Star, slashing .276/.393/.447 with 13 homers and 48 RBIs.

The next off-season, Fowler signed a five-year, $82.5-million deal with the Cardinals.

Fowler gives the Blue Jays outfield depth with George Springer, Lourdes Gurriel Jr., Teoscar Hernandez and Ramiel Tapia also on the roster.
