It could end up being quite the night for milestones in the NHL with Edmonton Oilers forwards Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl closing in on 100 points and 50 goals, respectively.
Draisaitl sits in second place in the Maurice “Rocket” Richard Trophy race with 48 goals and still has the opportunity to be the first player this season to reach the 50-goal milestone. Toronto Maple Leafs star Auston Matthews scored his 49th of the season Tuesday night to take sole possession of first place.
Draisaitl will need a two-goal effort against the Los Angeles Kings, though, and by his standards that’s entirely within the realm of possibility.
The 26-year-old German has 12 goals in 14 games this month alone, including seven on his current four-game goal streak.
Draisaitl has 14 multi-goal games so far this season — zero goals in two outings against L.A., mind you. He has had three separate four-game goal streaks this season but hasn’t been able to extend a goal streak to five straight.
His anytime goal odds for Wednesday are -135 and a multi-goal line was set at +500.
Draisaitl’s previous career high for goals in a season was an even 50 during the 2018-19 campaign. It took him 81 games to reach 48 goals that season; he has done it in just 67 games this season.
It’s a busy night on the sports schedule and hockey fans can enjoy a Scotiabank Wednesday Night Hockey slate this week that features three Western Canadian teams.
The Kings lost 6-1 to the Seattle Kraken on Monday and are travelling to Edmonton with a depleted roster to face an Oilers team coming off a 6-1 win over the Coyotes.
Kings-Oilers can be seen on SN1 and Sportsnet Pacific.
CAN KEMPE START NEW HOT STREAK?
Adrian Kempe continues to lead the Kings with 28 goals, even though he has gone cold in the past month with only three since late February. This relative drought comes after Kempe scored 24 goals in a 40-game stretch from early November to late February.
Is Kempe the right player to ride for the Kings tonight?
Kempe’s betting odds vs. Oilers:
Anytime goal +170 | First goal +1400 | Last goal +1400
Over 2.5 shots +100 | UNDER 2.5 shots -125
Over 0.5 points -115 | UNDER 0.5 points -110
OVER 0.5 assists +220 | UNDER 0.5 assists -290
OVER 0.5 PP points +300 | UNDER 0.5 PP points -425
Kempe has the shortest anytime goal odds of any Kings player but perhaps the best Kempe bet of the night is taking the over on his shots total.
The 25-year-old Swede was held without a shot Monday but had at least three shots on goal in each of his five preceding games. He is seeing even odds (+100) for over 2.5 shots on goal; under 2.5 shots on goal is the slight -125 favourite.
WILL MCDAVID REACH 100-POINT MILESTONE TONIGHT?
McDavid getting to the 100-point plateau for the fifth time in his NHL career is inevitable. It’s a matter of when, not if, and it could happen as early as Wednesday against the Kings. The odds suggest there’s a high probability he does.
He’s currently at 98 points, which is a two-point cushion on teammate Draisaitl in the Art Ross race.
McDavid’s betting odds vs. Kings:
Anytime goal -105 | First goal +900 | Last goal +900
Over 1.5 points -105 | UNDER 0.5 points -120
Over 3.5 shots +105 | UNDER 3.5 shots -130
OVER 0.5 assists -215 | UNDER 0.5 assists +165
OVER 0.5 PP points +110 | UNDER 0.5 PP points -140
McDavid has 10 goals and 18 assists in 22 career games against the Kings, averaging 3.36 shots per game in those contests. He has seven goals, 19 assists and 36 shots on goal during his current 10-game point streak.
BARGAIN HUNTING
We’ve focused heavily on the Kings-Oilers game thus far, so here are a handful of players from other games Wednesday laying anytime goal odds of at least 2/1.
Alex Tuch (+235) to score vs. Jets: The big winger is skating on Buffalo’s top line and scored the tying goal in his team’s huge comeback win over Chicago on Monday — and Winnipeg is expected to be without a few key players.
Rasmus Dahlin (+450) to score vs. Jets: It’s a long shot, sure, but the 2018 first-overall pick had a two-goal game against Winnipeg earlier this season, the only two-goal game of his career.
Jets-Sabres can be seen on Sportsnet.
Lucas Raymond (+265) to score vs. Rangers: The Calder Trophy contender and his Detroit Red Wings teammates look to rebound from an 11-2 drubbing at the hands of the Penguins on Sunday. Raymond already has 20 goals this season and the Rangers are on the second night of back-to-back road games.
Rangers-Red Wings is available on SN NOW Premium, as is San Jose vs. Arizona and Vegas vs. Seattle in a battle of the two newest franchises.
Conor Garland (+285)/Tanner Pearson (+300) to score vs. Blues: Despite playing on his team’s top line with Pearson and J.T. Miller, Garland is riding a 15-game goalless drought. Pearson only has one goal in his past 11. All three members of this line had five shots on goal but went pointless and a combined minus-8 in a Monday loss against these same Blues.
Blues-Canucks is available on Sportsnet Pacific with regional restrictions in place.
